Call for Candidates: 2021-22 Board of Trustees

We are seeking candidates for the NYSOA's Board of Trustees! Are you interested in becoming more involved in organized optometry? If so, this is an excellent opportunity to make your voice heard and have a direct impact on the NYSOA's goals and initiatives.

The following positions are open for nominations. Interested candidates should submit a CV or resume and a brief statement of intent at https://forms.gle/5tssFsifGowkUbR79 by Monday, March 29, 2021.

NYSOA Executive Officers:

  • Metropolitan Region (1 opening)
  • Hudson-Mohawk Region (1 opening)
  • Finger Lakes-Niagara Region (1 opening)

About NYSOA Executive Officers

The Officers of the NYSOA include the President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Immediate Past President. With the exception of President and Immediate Past President, all officers are elected by the membership at the annual House of Delegates meeting and serve a one-year term. The office of Secretary and the office of Treasurer may be held by the same individual.

The current Executive Officers listed below will be seeking re-election to new offices as follows:

  • Candidate for President-Elect: Vice-President Dave Ciccone, OD
  • Candidate for Vice-President: Secretary Marina Su, OD
  • Candidate for Secretary: Treasurer Mark Parsons, OD

The Nominating Committee invites candidates for the office of Treasurer and any additional candidates for the offices named above to submit their statement of intent at this time.


About NYSOA Regional Trustees

Regional representation on the NYSOA Board of Trustees is divided into three separate geographic regions, each including a number of trustees reflective of the number of members in each area. Trustees are elected by the members of their respective regions and serve staggered three-year terms. Current Regions and Trustees are as follows:

Region 1: Metropolitan
OSCONY, SUNYCO, Nassau and Suffolk Societies

Three elected Trustees:

  1. Opening: Monica Nguyen, OD: term expires 2021
  2. Saysha Blazier, OD: term expires 2022
  3. Gina Cardone, OD: term expires 2023

Region 2: Hudson-Mohawk
WRP, Hudson Valley, Eastern, Mohawk Valley, Northern and South Central Societies

Two elected Trustees:

  1. Opening: Matt Allen, OD: term expires 2021
  2. Angela Marx, OD: term expires 2022

Region 3: Finger Lakes-Niagara
Central, Rochester, Western, and Southern Tier Societies

Two elected Trustees:

  1. Opening: Vadim Guy, OD: term expires 2021
  2. Chris Shiomos, OD: term expires 2023

Duties of the Board of Trustees

General duties of the Board of Trustees and officer-specific duties can be found in Article VII, Sections 7.04-7.05 of the NYSOA Constitution. In addition to attending 2-3 in-person meetings a year, Board members are expected to participate in monthly conference calls with the Association's staff and consultants. These calls alternate between the Executive Officers and the full Board of Trustees. Board members are also expected to attend the Association's Annual Meeting, Advocacy Day, and Annual Leadership Retreat, and may be called upon to represent the NYSOA at various regional and national meetings.

Regional Trustees are responsible for serving as liaisons between the Board of Trustees and the local societies they represent. They are expected to attend society meetings in their region and maintain close two-way communications with these societies and their leadership.


The Nomination Process

Officers: Any NYSOA member in good standing may declare his or her intention to run for office.

Trustees: Any NYSOA member in good standing may declare his or her intention to run in the Region in which they live or work.

All candidates must submit a CV and a brief statement as to why the candidate wishes to run. This information will be made available to members on the NYSOA website upon receipt of all nominations. All nomination materials must be submitted electronically at https://forms.gle/5tssFsifGowkUbR79. Only nominations submitted in this way will be considered. All nominations must be received by the NYSOA no later than March 29, 2021.


The Trustee Election Process

Officers: Each candidate shall be interviewed by the Nominating Committee. Online voting will take place in April. House of Delegates representatives will cast an electronic ballot on behalf of their local society members and their local society as a whole. The new terms will commence in May.

Trustees: Online voting will be open to the general membership in April. Members may vote for trustees in their region. Regional Trustees' terms will commence in May and expire at the spring House of Delegates meeting at the end of their term.
