The most dramatic change in "Evaluation and Management" (E&M) coding in the outpatient setting starts in January 2021. The last time the "E&M" CPT codes (992XX) underwent a major revision was in the 1990s. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) established the "patients over paperwork initiative" which will dramatically change the way office visits are coded and billed. History and examination components of the office visit will no longer be used for coding outpatient office visits. Starting this January, optometrists will be coding based upon "medical decision making" or "time." This change is historic; it will impact coding and billing for every office visit. Reimbursement changes will also occur starting this coming January.

This 90-minute course reviews the documentation needed to support these changes. Viewers will learn the various components of "medical decision making" and "time." Clinical examples are offered. We urge all optometrists in New York State to view this program.
