Active/Full, Optometric Educator, Partial Practice, Retired, Student and Lifetime

Please Note: Dues are assessed annually on a calendar basis. New and reinstated members are eligible for proration of their AOA and NYSOA dues on a monthly basis. Dues are assessed for the month in which the member joins and for all remaining months. The proration of dues applies to all membership classifications that have an annual dues obligation. This proration policy does not apply to Local Society dues.


Active/Full

Those optometrists, duly licensed and registered by the State of New York, who maintain an active practice of optometry over sixteen (16) hours per week, who pay full dues or sliding scale dues as established by the Constitution of the NYS Optometric Association, and who are members in good standing of an Affiliated Society in New York State.

Optometric Educator

1. An optometrist who is a full-time educator primarily engaged in school related activities such as teaching, research and administration at a school or college in New York, accredited or pre-accredited by the Council on Optometric Education.

2. An optometrist, not licensed in New York to practice optometry, who holds an administrative, academic or clinical position in an educational institution or program accredited by the Council on Optometric Education, and who contributes to the advancement of the objectives of this Association.

3. An individual who is not an optometrist, who holds an administrative, academic or clinical position in an educational institution and who contributes to the advancement of the objects of this Association, subject to the approval of an affiliated society.

Partial Practice

An optometrist who works sixteen (16) or fewer hours per week in compensated optometically related activities and whose status is certified annually by an affiliated society as a partial practice or equivalent member is considered partial pratice and is eligible to receive a 40% discount off AOA and NYSOA dues (Local Society dues remain at the full rate).

Retired - With Benefits and Without Benefits

An optometrist who has been an active, partial practice, or federal services member and is no longer engaged in compensated optometrically related activities, whose status is certified annually by an affiliated society as a retired member, and has not been approved for life membership in the Association, and whose dues are timely received by this Association from such affiliated society shall be a retired member of this Association.

Retired members who elect not to pay annual dues and are not eligible to be Lifetime Members are considered retired without benefits.

Student

1.(i). Those students, who are not licensed optometrists, regularly enrolled in courses leading to the O.D. degree at any AOA accredited school or college of optometry in New York State; or residents of New York State similarly enrolled in any school or college accredited by the AOA Council on Optometric Education; or

(ii). Non-practicing New York licensed optometrists who are full time students at an accredited institution of higher education, or other non-practicing optometrists similarly enrolled in such an institution located in the State of New York.

(iii) An optometrist who is engaged full-time as a resident or a fellow in a residency program approved by the Council on Optometric Education or by a school or college of optometry which is accredited by the Council on Optometric Education. Application for such post-graduate membership shall be made directly to this Association and shall contain a certification of the resident's full-time status by an appropriate official of the residency program. Such post-graduate membership shall become effective upon approval by the Board of Trustees or the Secretary or Treasurer as the Board's designee and may continue until the end of the calendar year in which the resident's participation in the program is completed.

2. Student membership shall become effective on admittance to the Student Optometric Society of New York and may continue until the student has graduated, completed his internship when required by law and has been licensed to practice. Student membership shall not continue for more than six months after graduation, and in the case of non-practicing optometrists, six months after the end of the period of attendance at the institution of higher education.

3. Student membership shall affiliate through the Student's Optometric Society of New York State.

Lifetime

Lifetime membership is awarded through a nomination application process through the AOA and carries $0 in annual dues. In order to be considered for Lifetime Membership, a member:

• Must have 45 years of cumulative AOA membership. Student membership is included in the accumulative years. Retired without Benefits is not included in the accumulative years.

• Must be a current member in good standing for at least one year prior to the transition into life membership. Member cannot transfer from retired without benefits to life membership.

• If member does not meet the membership requirements as stated above, but has been named a life member of the affiliated association, a written explanation is required from the affiliate as to the rational or circumstance for wanting the member to become a life member. The final decision on whether the member may then become a life member of AOA is subject to the approval by the AOA Secretary-Treasurer.

• Members who provide medical certification of terminal or other serious debilitative illness may have the years of membership requirements waived, subject to the approval of the AOA Secretary-Treasurer.

Spousal Discount

Married members are eligible for one spouse to receive a 50% reduction of the NYSOA portion of his or her dues. 

Ascending Dues Schedule

Newly licensed graduates are eligible for an ascending dues schedule effective during their first through fifth years of membership. New practitioners pay the percentage of full dues indicated.

Voluntary Contributions

The Optometric Political Action Committee (OPAC) and the Children's Vision Coalition (CVC) are voluntary contributions. The requested annual contribution to the OPAC is $99.00. The requested annual contribution to the CVC is $100.00.
