School Vision Health Month

We Need Volunteers!

The State of New York has declared October 2017 to be School Vision Health Month, and the NYSOA is working with the NYS Education Department to get the message out that all school-age children need comprehensive eye exams. As such, we have partnered with the VSP Mobile Eyes program to bring mobile eye clinics to children in underserved areas.

We are seeking volunteers to work with the VSP Mobile Eyes program and provide comprehensive eye exams to children at various school sites throughout the state during the month of October.

Each mobile clinic will be set up to offer up to five exams at one time, in portable lanes set up on site. For each site, we need five volunteer ODs to spend a day providing eye exams to children in need. Volunteers do not have to be VSP-affiliated ODs. We are also accepting both NYSOA members and non-members.

The mobile clinics will make their way from Western NY to the Capital Region beginning the first week in October. There will be six sites in total; the exact dates and locations are listed in the sign-up form below.

Travel stipends will be available for volunteers traveling significant distances:

  • Volunteers who travel more than 100 miles roundtrip will be eligible for a $50 stipend.
  • Volunteers who travel more than 200 miles roundtrip will be eligible for a $150 stipend.

Can you set aside one day to contribute to this important initiative? This is an opportunity to give back to your community while raising the visibility of optometry and promoting eye health, and a successful program this year could create the foundation for growing a major campaign in the years to come.
